Sidemen Village is a beautiful village belonging to Sidemen sub-district, Karangasem and about 42 km east of Denpasar city. After passing through Paksebali village from the highway to Goa Lawah Temple, the way to Sidemen remains to show off green areas such as rice fields and moors with hilly background.
Due to pristine nature at hand, Sidemen is appropriate to be chosen as rural trekking routes. At some points in the rice fields, visitors will be able to see the wonderful view of Mount Agung (3,142 meters above sea level) when the weather is fine. The village itself is approximately 6 kilometers from peak of the volcano.
Aside from working as farmers, a number of villagers are craftsmen. They make distinctive endek fabrics by means of non-mechanical looms. And their works have been famous and better known as the endek of Sidemen.
Uniquely, not all weavers work directly at the workshop but their own home and take part time. Commonly, they work on the orders of Balinese typical fabric in their spare time after completing domestic jobs. It is not surprising that many of the weaving entrepreneurs employ up to hundreds of weavers located in several surrounding hamlets.
In terms of weaving patterns or motifs, they make a variety of designs, ranging from classic to contemporary motifs. Thus, consumers will have a wide range of selection in accordance with their interests.
